Hours 12/6 and Final Report

Yesterday I helped in the taping of Moc Talk. I ran the tricaster for the first time this year. I had done it in high school so I already knew the basics. I had to cut from camera to camera to get a close up on one speaker or to get the wide angle of the panel talking. I also ran audio which ran into some technical difficulties. It took us a while to figure out that one of the XLR cables wasn't working so we had to replace it. Besides that the show was smooth sailing I really enjoyed the experience of an all sports show.

Here is my report on this semester in Practicum 1

Over the course of my first semester as a freshman at Florida Southern I think practicum was the best class I could have taken to jump right into the field of broadcast. Practicum gave my practical experience in the studio and in the field to learn from others about the different aspects of the job. I did a lot of my hours with Maggie Sutton. She was a huge help to me in learning about interview skills, different ways to angle a shot, and about wellness. Learning from Maggie I feel like she really took time to make sure I knew what was going on every step of the way. She always made sure that I was learning something new every time I was with her and that was really helpful. Towards the end of the semester she was also starting to let me control the camera. She trusted in me that I had learned to make the rule of thirds and leave enough head room in interviews. She trusted that I had learned to check the sound before the interview and set up the microphones. She also did something that I wasn’t used to. When filming B-roll she challenged me to shoot common objects at different angles, to give it more of an appeal. Anyone can shoot directly at a water fountain, but if you create an angle people will have more interest and not just think, oh another common water fountain.

I also filmed a couple sports games. It was interesting to try to get the right angles to see the entire field or pool so that you could get all of the highlights. I learned that there is a lot more that goes into the highlights then just the game itself. You have to try to spotlight a certain player, make sure you get a bust shot of the coach and do a pan of the bench as well. I also wrote quite a few sports readers, I enjoyed writing the readers because they pertained to my interests. Researching the scores and statistics for each sport made it really fun to write them.

Working in the news room was probably the most interesting part of the class. With the new news room I feel like everyone had a learning curve and it was nice to be on the same level as everyone. I enjoyed working the camera for the news show. It was cool to have to work to find the right shot and make sure the focus, iris and lighting was all correct. With all the aspects that went into it I feel the camera job really took a lot of effort and made it one of the best jobs in the news room. I did not hit the intended goal of 36 hours in the class but I feel that with the learning curve of being a freshman, I think I did a good job being able to learn quickly and get involved in anything I could.

Practicum Hours 12/3

On the 25th I worked the camera for the last news show of the semester. It was actually a lot easier this time because first I actually knew what I was doing with the iris, and with the use of the new tripods it became a lot easier to angle the camera. Over the break I started a documentary that I will be filming and editing over the summer for my field experience. I am doing a documentary for the City of Naples on its special needs program and trying to show the great aspects of it. Over break I filmed the Thanksgiving break camp and special needs swim lessons. The goal of the documentary is to show the inclusion between the special needs program and the regualr summer camp that the city has to offer.

Practicum Hours 11/22

Last Monday I was the camera man for the news show. It was a new experience because we filmed the entertainment rewind round table. I thought it was a cool idea because we had 3 cameras shooting at different angles. I also helped Maggie shoot the blood drive for Go Healthy FSC. She really let me do a lot this week. I filmed the interview, and her stand up. She also taught me how to shoot b roll in an interesting way, to play with the angles and make a boring shot more fun and entertaining.

Practicum Hours 11/11

Last week I worked on the news show. The biggest thing I learned was about lighting and how important it is. I learned that adding extra light can take away shadows and that there are different types of lights for different situations. I also wrote a reader on the women's basketball team that lost both of its games to start off the season. Finally on Sunday I went to the filming of the record and observed a scene being filmed, I saw the different aspects that go into filming a movie and how crucial every part and person on the set can be.

practicum hours 11/3

This morning I wrote 2 readers. One was on the men's basketball team that had two exhibition matches over the weekend against 2 SEC schools Florida, and Tennessee. Even though the mocs lost both games it seemed like they held their own and competed. I also wrote a reader on the unveiling of the Sharp Family Tourism and Education center, including the new usonian house. I was at 2 events this week for it. I helped put the Wright statue up and was there for the official unveiling on Thursday night.

On Friday the 25th I helped Maggie shoot an interview for Go Healthy FSC. We interviewed Michael McElveen in the Wellness Center about replenishing electrolytes and what supposedly does it better. It was good experience watching an interview and setting up the equipment. On Saturday the 26th I filmed the swim meet. It was a little difficult at first because I really didn't know what I was doing, but once I got the hang of it, it got a lot easier and it was fun.

Practicum hours 10/11

On Monday I helped Maggie with the Go Healthy FSC segment. We went to the medical center to get her flu shot. I learned that its a lot more than just the subject of the shot. You also have to get other details for B-roll not just simply someone getting a shot.

practicum hours 10/7

Last Sunday I wrote a reader about the tennis team at the regional championships. It was a good learning experience because I had to write about an event that was still in progress but would be over by the time the news show was out. On Saturday night I filmed the soccer match. We helped for the second half of the girls game and learned what to do. Then we filmed the boys game. It was cool to film the live action and it was good to learn the camera so we knew to how use it. It was interesting to see where was best for us to film and what we needed to film to be used in the highlights.

Practicum Hours 9/25

On Sunday I wrote a reader for Monday's news show on the volleyball games over the weekend. This was my first reader so it took me a little while to get the hang of it. The volleyball team won both of its matches in the tournament that day at St. Leo University.

Practicum Hours 9-19

Today I helped Maggie film two interviews for Go Healthy FSC. We were filming for the Gluten Free segment. I learned how to angle the camera so that it is at eye level with the interviewee, I also learned that the person giving the interview should be slightly to the side of the camera so the person being interviewed isn't looking directly at the camera. I learned that you should always check the sound before actually filming the interview. She showed me that the cord from the microphone should be hidden from the camera and that you should shoot from the chest up. I learned a lot about going out and doing field interviews.

Practicum hours for week of Sep. 9th

Last week I spent an hour helping Justin Richards film part of his internship video. I set up the camera and audio. I had to make sure that the tricaster saved the recording to the hard drive as well. I positioned the camera and filmed Justin. I also participated in the news show for 9/9/13. I was on the tricaster, it was more of a review on how to use the tricaster. I had to record the show and make sure the background images were up on the screen.
