Final Practicum

Practicum Final Review

Over the course of my second semester as a freshman at Florida Southern I think practicum was a good learning experience. Practicum gave my practical experience in the studio and in the field to learn from others about the different aspects of the job. This semester was different than the last because I was able to see more problems of a news show. We had a lot of technical difficulties like frames dropping, the lighting not working and more. We also had the problem of not having enough people to efficiently get things done. I actually am happy that we had these problems this semester because I got to help try and figure out what was going wrong. Last semester I was able to learn the ins and outs of broadcast this semester I feel like I learned more about how to solve potential problems. That is practical for the real world because anything that can go wrong will go wrong and you have to be prepared to be able to handle those issues.

This semester was fun for me because I was able to start making features for the news show. I made 2 features for the show this year. One was on the SAE glow party over scholars weekend and one was on the Honors Celebration. This was fun for me because I was able to get out into the field and learn hands on what I should do and then I get to see my work in the show, which was really satisfying. I also wrote quite a few sports readers; I enjoyed writing the readers because they pertained to my interests. Researching the scores and statistics for each sport made it really fun to write them. I also stepped up with the small class size and took some readers not in my interest zone, about the school and other areas.

Working in the news room was probably the most interesting part of the class. With the new news room I feel like everyone had a learning curve and it was nice to be on the same level as everyone. I enjoyed working the camera for the news show. It was cool to have to work to find the right shot and make sure the focus, iris and lighting were all correct. With all the aspects that went into it I feel the camera job really took a lot of effort and made it one of the best jobs in the newsroom. I think I did a good job being able to learn quickly and get involved in anything I could.

Practicum Hours 4/14

For hours over the last week I wrote 2 readers and worked on the news show, I worked on audio at the news show and watched rachel be the director for an in studio interview. It was a good learning experience because I was able to watch how the cameras should be switched and the way they should be set up. I wrote readers on the mens and womens track teams as the competed in their last regular season meets of the season. The mens 4x800 team set the second fastest time in school history where the women had a rough meet and came in last in the meet out of 13 teams. I also don't know if it counts but ill add it tentatively that I was a part of ashley's feature on the news studio being interviewed.
